“Owners, Johanna and James Windon are cutting the ribbon to their second location in the food court at the Streets at Southpoint Mall in Durham. The opening comes less than a year after their first location opened at the Morgan Street Food Hall in Raleigh in September 2021.
The idea behind the french fry bar came during the COVID-19 pandemic while cooking their favorite Colombian dish, bandeja paisa. “We are bringing a little taste of Colombia to North Carolina," Johanna Windon said. The gourmet french fry bar has grown to include a signature menu, paying homage to different cultures.”

This morning, we're shining the small business spotlight on one-of-a-kind addition to the streets at Southpoint mall. Buena Papa, a Colombian inspired meal, that serves a meal on fries. Well, today the restaurant is celebrating its second location in Durham and we’re so happy to have the owner's here to talk about this expansion. Great to see you both.

Indy Week: Buena Papa to Open New Eatery at Southpoint Mall
Each menu item at Buena Papa is built on a bed of hand-cut, made-to-order fries, with toppings shaped by a certain country or region; the “El Colombiano,” for instance, is inspired by the traditional Colombian dish bandeja paisa and loaded with Colombian refried beans, chicharron, chorizo, guacamole, and pico de gallo. Other items feature Mexican, Puerto Rican, Greek, Italian, and Carolina-inspired toppings.
At its Durham location, Buena Papa will be offering a new dish, “El Dominican,” with salami, fried cheese, an over-easy egg, mayo-ketchup sauce, and garlicky cilantro. “The taste buds in Durham are primed and ready for new flavors,” James says.

Buena Papa Fry Bar, a local Raleigh restaurant (Morgan Street Food Hall) known for serving a Colombian-inspired meal on fries, announced the grand opening of a new location in Durham with a ribbon-cutting celebration scheduled for Thursday, July 21 at The Streets at Southpoint Mall (food court) at 11 am. During the grand opening they will have giveaways of free fries for a year every 1/2 hour, live music and merchandise giveaways. Follow them on Instagram here. Additionally, to celebrate Colombian Independence Day July 20, Buena Papa will be offering their signature Colombia tribute dish “El Colombiano” for half price at their Raleigh location.
919 Raleigh: Buena Papa Fry Bar Durham
Buena Papa Fry Bar has been open in Morgan Street Food Hall for almost a year now. They are a local restaurant known for their Colombian Inspired take on fried potatoes. They are celebrating the grand opening of their newest location in Durham at The Streets at Southpoint Mall in the Food Court.
They will be officially open for business on Thursday, July 21 at 11:00 AM As a special for the day, they will be giving away free fries for a year every half hour. Unique to their Durham location will be their new dish and a fried egg topping. The first 10 customers will enjoy their favorite Buena Papa dish on the house.
